What exactly is a "period film"?

I have heard the the phrase many times, but I did not realize that so many films are considered to be period films. Does the phrase refer to a film that is set during a certain time period, or can it refer to any film that takes place in the past?

I think a period film is like you said - any movie that is set during a certain time period. I think a lot of fans of period films like to focus on films set before WW2 although different people have different criteria so it depends!
