please please please answer me

You know, especially in the books has been a long journey for them. At the beginning, she was totally into Stefan like right now in the show, but after a while she started developing feelings for Damon. And, in the last LJ Smith's book (unfortunatly Midnight is the last one that she writes, she has been fired because she wanted a DE endgame) is very clear that Elena choose Damon in the end. I don't want to spoiler you very much, but for example Stefan says to her "It's not. It's not me that you want", and even Damon choose Elena in the end. He said to her that she is the only girl that he has ever loved.
Techically, there are a lot of evidences and quotes that mean that Damon & Elena belong together. Like I said, unfortunatly LJ has been fired so next trilogy will be written by a ghostwriter who'll make for sure a SE endgame, and maybe a DB one. But, for me, the TVD books have ended with this last one.

Talking about the show..baby steps. I can't deny that right now Elena is totally in love with Stefan, but she has started having feelings for Damon. At the end of the season, we're expecting that Elena will finally remember Damon's confession and\or they will kiss. :P

For the books - No, they're dead now, since LJ was fired and is being replaced by a ghostwriter.

In the books Elena chooses Damon.The T.V.series she does care for him there is a possibilty.
