“Sweetie are you okay? Mum asked.
“Yeah, why?” I questioned her
“Your very quiet today” Daddy answered.
“That’s a first” I laughed.
We arrived at the Cullen’s house, and were greeted with a big hug from Alice.
“Lets go hunting.” She said in her high soprano voice, dragging dad to the door.
“Can I come?” I asked in a small voice.
She looked at dad, probably sharing her thoughts. He turned to me, “If you wish”
“Come on lets go. I saw some mountain lions in the area and I am sure you want to get them before they leave.” Alice said to dad. He smiled my mum’s favourite crooked smile then laughed. They headed into the living room to say bye. I followed them.
Everyone was there except from Rosalie, she was in the hallway playing the piano. “Don’t do a Bella and Fall down!” Emmett said from the couch. Mum grabbed a cushion from the loveseat and smacked Emmett across the head with it. He just laughed.
“Come on, we need to go now.” Alice impatiently said.
“Fine. Renesmee, come on. We need to go” Dad told me. I took Alice’s hand in my right and my dads in my left, they quickly gave Jasper and Bella a kiss my mum kissed my forehead then all of a sudden Alice had me running out the door.
We had run about a mile east of Forks, when we eventually got to the mountain lions, Dad had run ahead and already bagged two. Alice had just got her first one and I still had none. A couple of minutes passed before I got another chance, but it didn’t put up much of a fight. I glanced over to Alice and noticed that my dad’s eyes were already fixed to her face. “Why now?” Alice whispered to him while licking her scarlet lips.
“I don’t know” he answered uneasily.
What is it?” I ran over to them.
“Nothing,” Alice replied instantly, “Go finish off your lion”
I threw her another glance before looking at my dad. He agreed, “Go finish your lion.” He paused, “There’s nothing to worry about.” I walked slowly over to my lion but it didn’t feel the same. They were keeping something from me. I was going to find out what it was. I heard a small chuckle from behind me. I turned around to see my dad smiling at me. I grinned a cheesy grin then continued slaughtering my lion. Once I was finished I started to head over to Alice, but froze in my tracks as she was staring aimlessly into space. That’s not a good sign. Dad was at her side in an instant
“What? What’s happening? What aren’t you telling me? I questioned them.
“Just tell her, she is going to find out soon enough.” Dad said.
Alice turned to me and said, “They’re coming.”
"Who's coming?" I asked her confused
"5 members of the Volturi" she replied.
"Who?!" I questioned her again. Dad stared at her intently as if he didn’t know either.
"Demetri, Felix, Alec, Heidi and another one, Chelsea I think. *
I saw my dad flash her a very worried expression.
"Why?" He asked looking quite nervous.
"Is that bad?" I inquired.
"Very" she said, ignoring dad's question.
"Why?" He asked again looking more and more nervous.
"ehm..." she said. Then her blank expression took over her face. After a few very tense seconds she came out of it. "I don't know. They are being very careful about not making direct decisions. Making it very hard for me to see."
" We better get Renesmee out of here if they are coming." dad said Alice nodded one sharp nod. "I am going to go and call Carlisle to warn him. You wait here with Renesmee.”
What was really that bad about a few of them coming. They probably just want to see how we are doing. I looked up at my dad knowing he would have heard that.
"Renesmee it's more complicated than that." he said, " they don't like to travel much." With that he walked into the forest and pulled out his phone. He began dialling and talking to Carlisle.
"Why now? What for?” Alice questioned herself.
Why was she asking those questions? Just then I noticed my dad walking back over and stood at my side. Alice never looked up. “Why Heidi? Why Chelsea? Where’s Jane?” still questioning herself.
I took my dad's hand because Alice's questioning began to scare me. He squeezed my hand, probably trying to comfort me, and said "She want to know why it's Heidi because she only leaves to get the food. Why Chelsea because she never leaves Aro's side. And Alec is never without Jane. they are two halves of one whole."
"Oh." It was about all I could manage. It was bad. But why were they coming? I couldn't bring myself to ask them again.
" How are we going to get home?" Dad asked Alice, " If we go home the way we came they will track our scent and head to the house. If they go there we are just making things worse for everyone."
"I am not sure, I can't find anyway home without them tracing our scent."
"We could tree hop?" I suggested, with an attempt to make the mood a little lighter.
My dad gave me a stern look. "Renesmee. Don't be silly. this isn't a time for jokes. we could be in real trouble if we don't go home now and besides..."
"Actually," Alice cut him off, " Renesmee's idea isn't that bad, it would keep our scent off the ground and they wouldn't expect that. It would buy us enough time to get home."
"Ha!" I said smiling at him. He threw me a quick smile. so quick if I wasn't half vampire I probably wouldn't have seen it.
Alice's face went blank then Dad's face turned to shock and worry all rolled up into to one expression. I look at Alice waiting for her to come out of her vision. What ever she saw it probably wasn't good.
A few seconds passed before she returned to the present time, with a very concerned expression.
"What is it? What did you see?" I asked frantically.
She looked at Dad probably sharing her thoughts with him. What was she saying to him?
She looked at me again, "They're here. In Forks. It's too late to go anywhere, they can track us regardless now.
Then my dad froze. Alice looked into deep into the forest and I glanced at the mountain lion that I had not yet finished. I quickly turned back around just in time to see 5 figures coming towards us. They were all very similar, apart from their height and builds. They all wore long cloaks that draped down to their ankles and hoods over their hair and forehead.
Dad tensed up while Alice just relaxed. She sure seemed a lot at ease while all this is going on. I wonder how she manages that. Probably from being with Jasper so much. I hid behind my dad. They approached us and stood about 7 feet away from us. They formed a sort of V shape. A muscular male in front with two women behind him. At the edge of the V there were another two men. They were like most other vampires I suppose. Beautiful, but the redness of their irises was very unusual, a strange shade of crimson, I remember meeting a load of vampires who drank human blood a few years back but none of their eyes were anything this bright.
"Hello Alice, Edward." The vampire at the front said. He was tall, and muscular like Emmett.
"Hello Felix" Dad replied.
"It's good to see that you are well, Aro will be pleased." Felix said. I swore I saw one of the males, Alec, I remember him from the last time, roll his eyes.
" What brings you lot to Forks? I thought you didn't go out much." Alice inquired then a big grin flashed on her face. her bright white teeth shining in the dim light.
"Aro has requested that we came here. To get you and your brother." the blond female said. She reminded me so much of Rosalie.
" Aw. I am touched. really. but I think my answer is no."
"mine also." dad said.
"Ah but you see we weren’t sent here, to Forks to ask you to join us. we were sent to make you join."
Suddenly everything clicked into place. Felix, Alec and the other guy were all the strongest guards. Chelsea- if it was her. I heard that she can alter the bonds between people but she finds it harder with families and it is near enough impossible to try it on Soul mates. That would explain the concentrated expression on her face. Would she try and break the bonds between Alice and Dad to everyone else, including me? No, she couldn't do that. Could She?
"Come with us." the blond said holding out her hand.
Her voice was mesmerizing, beautiful. Alice turned and looked at the blond and a smile played on her lips. She turned it into a full volume snarl and launched herself at Heidi. Felix had grabbed her before she had reached the blond.
She struggled in his big muscled arms but couldn't get out. "Felix, let me go!" she shouted.
They all laughed.
Then the blond noticed me, cowering from behind my dad.
"Well, who's this? " she said pointing towards me.
"That's Renesmee." Alice said smugly.
"Renesmee?" The other man at the back said with a startled expression, began walking forward. Demetri.
He looked at me and winked, "You have grown so much in the past 5 years. I wouldn't recognise you."
I just stared blankly at him.
“Ah. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Demetri.” He said a small grin appeared on his face.
“Nice to meet you, Demetri.” I said in my clear soprano voice.
Dad cleared his throat like he was about to speak, “Anyway, what would you do if we declined your invitation?”
“It’s not an invitation, it’s a demand.” Heidi laughed.
“Well, regardless of what it is, what would you do if we said no?” he asked again.
“Hmm. That’s easy. We won’t have to go through that because you will come with us no matter what happens. In fact Chelsea is working on that as we speak.” I glanced over at Chelsea and sure enough she looked totally concentrated in whatever she was doing.
Alice had stopped wriggling in Felix’s arms. She turned around so her body was pressed against his and looked up at his face. She smiled at him and he smiled back. Uh oh, but then she curled her hand into a fist and launched it, full speed into his face. He let go of her and grabbed hold of his nose. I think she has broken it.
“Oww.” He cried, “You little freak.” He let go of his nose and lunged at her. She moved gracefully to the left and he went flying through the air and into a tree.
Dad laughed, “You really can’t mess with family.”
“Oh you wait. It won’t take her long to split you all up. Maybe another couple of minutes.” Alec laughed.
Alice skipped over and took my hand and squeezed it. Felix went back to his space with his fellow Volturi members but his eyes never left Alice. “I am going to get you” he promised her.
“I am counting on that one.” She said and laughed at him.
He snarled and launched himself at her. Dad put one arm in front of Alice and pushed him right back to where he came from. He didn’t like that. “Why can’t you just let me get her?” Felix cried.
“Because, like I said, you really can’t mess with family.” He chuckled again.
Heidi giggled then held out her hand again. “Come little one” she said to Alice, “you must come back to Volterra with us.”
I felt Alice’s grip on my hand tighten. “I will not go with you Heidi, and you can stop trying to convince me. It won’t work!”
“Alice.” Dad warned her,
“Edward. Stay out of it. This is between me and Heidi.”
“Yeah. You heard the midget stay out of it.” Heidi snorted.
Uh oh. Alice doesn’t like people making fun of her height, well apart from Emmett. I looked up at my dad and he was glaring at Heidi. He looked like he wanted to rip her head off.
With that Alice lunged for Heidi’s throat. She pushed her to the ground and started punching her. Heidi was very strong although I can’t say she looked it. She grabbed Alice’s throat and threw her into the air. She flew right into a tree. Ouch. It looked like it hurt. I would have ran over to see if she was okay but their was something about Alice’ behaviour that made me too scared to move, I have never seen her look so much like, a vampire. She jumped up but looked injured. Dad ran over to her to make sure she was okay and to try and stop her from fighting with Heidi. I heard some rustling in the trees and turned around to see Emmett and Jasper running full speed towards us. Jasper noticed that Alice was hurt and ran straight to her. He gave her a big hug and whispered something in her ear. Emmett came over to me and Dad came running back to hug me. Dad filled Emmett with what was happening and the five Volturi members were all huddled in a circle talking. Dad took my hand.
Jasper and Alice, with their arms wrapped round each others waist came over to us. Emmett put his arm on Dad’s shoulder but he shook it off. Then he let go of my hand and pushed me away. He pushed me! My own dad. I felt tears well up in my eyes and Emmett put his arms around me. I couldn’t believe he just did that.
“Yeah, why?” I questioned her
“Your very quiet today” Daddy answered.
“That’s a first” I laughed.
