I am not biased in this I love them both.
Its going to be hard to compare the two greatest books and movie series ever made. Although I will try anyway!
MOVIES
1. Grossing- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made 1.328 Billion Dollars. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King made 1.119 Billion Dollars. Potter wins this round!
2. Scenes- Harry Potter had really great scenes. Such as the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort in the OotP or the Battle of Hogwarts in the DH. LotR also has great scenes such as the battle of Helms Deep, Pelennor Fields, and when Frodo throws in the ring. I think I'm going to have to give it to LotR just for the shear magnitude and epicness of it all.
3. Acting- Both movies cast gave it there all. I could always feel there emotion. I cried with them, laughed with them, and made the journey with them. I'm going to say its a tie between them!
BOOKS.
1.Creativity- JKR created a secret society and carefully placed it into ours. She brought back old legends and created new ones. She made us believe in magic, which was a great feat. But JRR created an ENTIRE world. He made languages, histories, secrets, treasures, creatures, and all from one line he wrote on a blank paper. "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit". I'm going to go with JRR on this one.
2. Writing- Both books have excellent writing. Its pretty hard to compare them, I could only think of one thing. Description. JRR was sometimes a little over descriptive. It sometimes made it harder to keep reading for me. But JKR gives us just the amount of information we need at that moment. I'm going to give this to JKR.
3. Character Development- These authors did very well with character development. At the beginning of Harry Potter, Harry is just this naïve little troublemaker with a knack for dangerous situations. But as he matures he learns of his destiny to destroy Voldemort, and when he finally fulfills that destiny, he gets the happiness and peace he never had as a child. While in the beginning of LotR Frodo is a carefree, funloving Hobbit. But as he journeys out through his dangerous quest he has to fight against Gollum and the rings corruption, and the evil of Sauron. When he finally casts the ring in the fire he is a changed hobbit, his old self was left on the journey. Both authors display this almost perfectly so it is a tie
In my eyes they tie for both movies and books. You may have different views but one thing you cant deny is that these will be a part of us forever and to future generations.
If you would like to add anything or say who you think would win comment please! This is my first post so any feedback will also be appreciated!

NERDS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) Attempt to use Snape's oily hair to cook chips
2) Send Snape shampoo
3) Take pictures of himself while showering and then sell them to the female population of Hogwarts.
4) Give Remus a makeover while he is asleep.
5) Ask the potions professor whether the day's assignment can be used a sexual lubricant.
6) Sign his essays 'Seriously Sexy Sirius'.
7) Convince Remus that all the books in the library have been stolen and that it is closing down.
8) Tell First years that Filch is the Voice of God.
9)Tell people that it's Remus' Time of the Month when he tells First Years off for breathing too loudly.
10)Calling Lucius Malfoy "Luscious Mouthful" is just plain gross
11)I will not change the password to the prefects' bath to "Makes getting clean almost as much fun as getting dirty".

Some Harry Potter fans might disagree with me, but... THE NEWEST MOVIE SUCKED!!!! Sorry to say this but it did. It was a lot shorter than all the others, there was almost no plot, and almost nothing happened the whole movie. All they accomplished in the movie was to find the initials of some guy. I hope the next one does a lot better than that one. Although I suppose Dumbledore dying was an interesting thing that happened. The only good thing that came out of that movie was that it progressed the story. Other fans should agree with me, and if they don't it would surprise me. I am a long time Harry Potter fan. I have all the movies and I have seen all of them in the theaters, and I have all the books. I'm not saying I am no longer a Harry Potter fan or I don't look forward to the next movie, but if you haven't seen the movie stick to the book.
