Harry Potter Question

Why can Harry only see thestrals after seeing Cedric's death?

I understand why his parents death doesn't count (he was too young to understand), but he also saw Quirell's death in 1992, why can't he see thestral after that? Is it because you need to feel sadness after seeing the death or something like that?

J.K.Rowling answered this question in "50 facts about HP":
Harry could not see the thestrals until his fifth year because it was only then he really appreciates what deaths mean. He was in his cot, so he never saw his parents die - just flashes of green light. He didn't see Professor Quirrell die. Only when he witnessed Cedric Diggory's death, and it had sunk in over the summer, could he see the thestrals.

Harry was unconscious by the time Quirrell died, so he didn't actually see Quirrell die - he was told about his death by Dumbledore afterwards.
