In a word, the prophecy. You see, the prophecy referred to a boy, born at the end of July toparents that defied Voldemort three times. This could mean either the Potters OR the Longbottoms. But, when Severus Snape passed the prophecy to Voldemort, he took it to mean the Potters.
Unfortunately for dear old Tom, the prophecy also said "and he will mark him as his equal" and this chosen one would have "power the Dark Lord knows not." Simply put, Voldemort hand-picked the man to finish him off and gave him uniquely deadly weapons.
The prophecy did NOT have to be fulfilled. But, because Snaape passed that information, because Voldemort interpreted it that way, because Voldemort believed it to be true, a chain of events was set in motion. Had Snape not been listening at the keyhole that night in 1981 in the Hog's Head, so many misfortunes could have been avoided, yet so many good things would not have happened.
And yet, "neither can lives while the other survives." One of them, Voldemort or the Chosen One, would have to be killed so the other could live.
Harry did not have to kill Voldemort because of the prophecy. He killed him because he wanted him finished and he wanted to do it.
