Why did the writers of the Deathly Hallows Part 1 let Gellert Grindelwald betray Dumbledore and also let him live?

Movie Version: Grindelwald tells Voldemort where the Elder Wand is and Voldemort lets him live.


Book Version: Grindelwald tells Voldemort to go to hell and Voldy kills Gellert in his cell at Nurmengard.
Why did the writers of the Deathly Hallows Part 1 let Gellert Grindelwald betray Dumbledore and also let him live?
