What happens to the first years' original Hogwarts robes after they are sorted?

Do the robes turn into the House colors of whatever house the students are sorted into? Or do the students give them back for the next year's first years to wear?

All of the Hogwarts students wear plain black robes no matter what house they're in. The colored robes in the movies and for costumes are just to show what house the person is from.
