Classic Disney Do you like how the Disney films that are based on classic books are only based loosely on the books?

I'm not too familiar with the books so I wouldn't really know. The classic movies are all amazing though.

Well some of the original stories, especially the fairytales were a little too dark for children. I like what they did with each story. For example in The little mermaid she doesn't get her man and i believe the ending is that she turns into sea foam if i remember correctly. Who would want to see that?

That is what happened in the Little Mermaid; it was a sad story. There are others though (like Beauty and the Beast) where it is still happy, but a slightly different story.

Most of the books would be rated PG-13 or worse so it's understandable.

Umm... the Disney movies are all ready pretty dark, and if they followed the actaul stories MORE, well... yeah. I don't think we want to watch Ariel get her tongue get cut off, watch her face in pain because it feels like she stepping on daggars, and then not get the prince in the end, right?

Heck, yeah! Disney's version of Hunchback of Notre Dame is much better than the book. I also love how they made Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast different from the original stories.

Fairytales have always been dark, and apart from HoND which wasn't a fairytale, the Disney films have cut out those dark sections.
Psssh, I remember the versions of stories where you got those lovely images of Cinderella burning her feet on the ashes she was forced to sleep by, the story of Rapunzel that ended with her prince blinded and her starving to death in the desert and the Hans Christian Andersen stories where pretty much everyone dies.
However, I think Disney work better being all happy and fun. Would The Little Mermaid have worked if Ariel had committed suicide at the end and Eric had married Vanessa? Would you have really sat through Cinderella's evil step sisters cutting chunks of flesh from their feet to fit into the glass slippers? No, you wouldn't. Because then it just wouldn't be Disney!

You can't exactly have everyone DIE in a Disney movie... haha.

Besides, there already is fair amount of darkness in a lot of those movies, honestly.

Good thing they did change the stories as much as they did. In today's politically correct world, I think they would have taken most Disney movies off the market by now if they had made their films too similar to the fairy tales. Most of them are unreasonably gruesome!

Off the top of my head, I can't actually think of any traditional stories Disney actually managed to ruin by bringing it into the animation world.

I was quite a sensitive kid, actually. I used to get pretty scared while watching most Disney movies when I was very young, just at the usual amount of peril they put into their movies. Now, I look back at it and realize what a good job they did with their villains and their dramatic scenes!! But I think I would have been mentally scarred for life if they had put *certain* things from the traditional fairy tales into their movies!

Disney is just so lovely and original. If youve ever been to the one in Florida, and even the one in Paris, you'll know how magical it is, and how they can change things to make it more imaginative and interesting.
If they'd stuck to the original stories then people wouldnt be interested as much. They'd be like 'heard all this before, let's watch this one to see what its like' and then that would be it. But the new ones are ones that people have never seen before and they keep you wondering what they're going to change next xx

My thoughts are the same as everybody else's. The original fairy tales were really depressing (Hans Christian Anderson) and disturbing (Brothers Grimm). Original BatB was fine but lacked a lot of action and the enchanted objects. I could see why Ron Clements and John Musker didn't like the original Aladdin. the message of the original tale was not right. Disney is better off being fun and happy-I don't think I want to see Ariel die while Eric marries Vanessa or Quasi and Esmeralda die while Phoebus suffers being married to Fleur. And I don't think I want to see Aurora and Rapunzel going through teen pregnancy b/c of Phillip and Flynn. Disney knows how to do thier own twists on classic tales while at the same time, staying true to the basic plots. If they did their movies as exactly as the original fairy tales then the films would be rated PG-13 or even R. (For Hercules, X )

Disney is still very original. The books stories sometimes don't have an happy ending (like The Little Mermaid) but Disney Company get them a wonderful happy ever after ending. I love how it can be possible everytimes. That's my opinion. Love Disney.

I agree with a lote of people that the fairytales are too dark for kids but the hunchback of notre dame lost its drama, Ariel seemed foolish but Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast were still very good. But as i choose it all depends.
