Personally of all the things said that always annoys me most ....grr, didn't earn it. I wish I could loan Anya my Buffy dvds so she could watch Buffy 'earn it'.
My 2nd choice would be Riley. He cheats with a vamp and by the end of the ep they all just forget and act like it was all Buffy's fault they split. I don't care how distant he felt she was, what he did was dreadful and I hate how they all forgot and acted like Riley was a good guy. When he came back Buffy looked at him like 'the one that got away' when all I wanted her to do was slap him and tell him to drag his Hooker-vamp lovin' ass outta her town.
I think the show's biggest fault is the fact that they left many betrayals/fights without closure, which often lowered my opinion of otherwise good characters. I know they can't waste loads of time having apology scenes, but it wouldn't exactly take long to throw in something quick to give things closure. Sometimes all it takes is an apologetic hug or even just the right look for me to be happy, but they didn't even do that usually.
But then I love in season 7 when Buffy was like "Remember you gave me Willow's message to kick his ass?" and Willows all like "I never said that."
But what Anya said was unfair, Buffy did earn the title as being the chosen one. She probley didn't at first but she had been protecting and saving the world for seven years now so she has earn the title.
Anya, I believe, is mearly stating what she believes. In a way it's almost true. Buffy didn't do anything to be given powers and because she has powers she is the natural leader. I'm a Buffy person so I'm pissed at her here but if you take it just at face value it's sort of true.
Riley with the vamps was cheating in an emotional sense, but I get it. Riley loves Buffy completely but he is unable to fully understand her and Buffy isn't completely open and honest with him so he goes to find someone who needs him. A vamp needs blood to live - his blood. He feels needed. I think the break up was good enough and that scene had enough emotion for me to be pleased.
I'm chaning my answer as of right now. I was going with Xander because I have an innate hatred of him stemming from this scene but Giles' believeing that he knows what is best and then attempting to kill somehow whom it was known Buffy had feelings for? Not right. I get that Spike could be dangerous and I understand that after the Angelus incident he is weary of vamps that can make Buffy see things differently, but still - grr.
As much as I love the Buffy & Giles relationship, it really falters in season 7, mostly due to Buffy's feelings and actions toward Spike. Giles doesn't feel what she's doing is right, helping him. Giles was completely out of line helping Robin try to kill Spike. It was a stupid and reckless thing to do when there was so much more important things going on. World going to end, girls going to die. Who cares if Spike killed his mother years ago, and like Buffy said, that wasn't even him, because he had changed. I really wish Buffy could've really told off Giles for doing this, maybe even yell at him. Although I loved the way she dissed him and Robin at the end of the ep :)
Xander and I would have a long talk...
it was hilarous when it was brought up again in season 7 between him, buffy and willow the look on buffy's and willow's faces when the truth was let outta the hat...grudges like xander had killed angel - inadventurely killed angel by what he did!
Also i totally agree with what Katie said about Anya. Anya is a character whose landmark is her honesty and objectiveness. When she said Buffy didn't earn it, i always believed and still believe that she just meant Buffy didn't fight to be Chosen, didn't pass any trials before she, out of the blue, was gifted with superpowers. They were just handed down to her. She didn't earn them.
Of course, it is 1000000% that since she got them, she rose up to the situation, faced heroically and successfully many apocalypses and therefore proved beyond ANY DOUBT that she deserved the Slayer superpowers.
Still, getting to be the Slayer is not something she earned, because they were just given to her, no questions asked.
