I've read 2 books by Nalo Hopkinson: Brown Girl in the Middle and Salt Roads. She's considered a sci-fi or speculative fiction writer, and incorporates spirituality into her stories. Salt Roads had racy passages, just so you know!

I liked "I Am Number Four"; and it is definitely science fiction. The only problem is that it cusses alot; so it depends on how much that bothers you. "I Am Number Four" is by Pittacus Lore.

I think you would love the Skinned trilogy by Robin Wasserman

It curses a few times but it's about this girl who died and was made into a machine to keep "living".

They are Skinned, Crashed and Wired and you must read them in order or they will make no sense. I am reading Crashed at the moment; it's pretty amazing if you want what I think about the series.

Try Anne McCaffrey. After that, you can give Stephen King a shot. A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels are good too. As for classic sci-fi, you can't go wrong with H.G. Wells.

First, there's "The Last Days of Krypton" by Kevin J. Anderson which I am almost finished reading. It's awesome, they should make a movie. And these are some past favs:

Anything on Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
1984 (a George Orwell classic)

The Maximum ride series. :D

1) Harry Potter. [J.K.Rowling] I'm a huge Narnia fan too, and I found Harry Potter great.
2) Gone. [Michael Grant] Great writing, outstanding plot and lovable charecters. Just warning you, some parts are not for the faint hearted.
3) The Hunger Games [Suzanne Collins] Another of my favourites. Very depressing though.
